Mobile VMS Journey Time Provision during Dunkettle Upgrade

The work to upgrade Cork’s Dunkettle Interchange / Jack Lynch Tunnel is due to commence in Spring. The project has been designed to ease congestion long term on all approaches to Dunkettle interchange, enabling traffic to move freely north-south between the M8 and the N40, as well as east-west between the N25 and N8. Mobile VMS are providing the Journey Time information on all the arterial routes converging on the Interchange for the duration of the project.

The Dunkettle infrastructure project, which is expected to cost in the region of €100m has been awarded to Sisk. Speaking to the Irish Examiner, Sean O’Neill of Transport Infrastructure Ireland said the upgrade plans represent one of the most complex projects they have ever undertaken and compared Dunkettle to the upgrade of Dublin’s Red Cow Interchange, completed in 2008.

Mobile VMS are providing the journey time information on all the arterial routes converging on the Interchange for the duration of the project. The scheme is expected to cause widespread disruption but the provision of accurate real-time journey information via our traffic sensors and variable message sign displays will allow motorists to make a more informed travel decision, reducing congestion, easing traffic flow and ensuring safer travel through the works.

Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) will also be offering a free app to provide motorists with our real-time traffic information directly during the €100m upgrade of  Dunkettle interchange in Cork.

The ‘Dunkettle’ Travel App has been described as a key tool in the management of traffic and the impact of the works. It is expected that the app will take reliable real-time information provided by Mobile VMS and convey the traffic situation directly to the travelling public. The information will also be provided to local and national media outlets. The app is planned for release early 2019 to coincide with the planned commencement of the works.
