M50 Ring Road Dublin - Traffic Responsive Travel 'Journey' Time

The M50 Ring Road is the major motorway toll road bypass for Dublin City. Its strategic function is to provide access to the Dublin port and airport, connect both residential and commercial centres around Dublin and cater for commuting traffic.

Problem

Congestion, incidents and delays during the M50 road widening scheme.

The M50 ring road is a major by-pass for Dublin. This roadway is the busiest in Dublin carrying about 90,000 motorists. Travel time was being provided for motorists during a widening scheme for a 6 lane carriageway.

The roads contractor needed motorists to consider alternative routes when excessive travel times existed through the works. This was Dublin's first road work scheme ITS system trial.

Solution

Mobile VMS temporary Intelligent Transport system (ITS) Solution, offering M50 project managers a mobile 'real time' traffic management system during widening works.

How it worked:

3 x variable message signs

10 traffic sensors

The system provided travel times and alternative route information during congested periods. The authorities noticed excessive speeds through the roadworks and they were well above posted speed thresholds. As a result the JamLogic system logic was simply reconfigured to provide excessive speed warnings when the average speeds exceeded 95kph. This threshold speed was determined by examining speed data from the previous week and setting it just above the 85th percentile. The goal was to try and keep speeds reasonable and reduce differentials and unsafe speeds.

The problems associated with this particular project were common to most road work zones, namely, congestion, difficulties for merging traffic and queues on merge and diverge slip lanes.

The agreed beneift to using the Mobile VMS Intelligent transport system (ITS)technology were:

  • The Mobile VMS technology lent itself to remote locations
  • The system is stand-alone in all respects
  • All technology used proven in previous applications
  • The system is simple to install and relocate
  • Operating costs are minimal
  • Maintenance requirements are low
  • Components are reliable
  • The system is available “off-the-shelf

Project Success

While the MVMS ITS solution provided travel times during congested periods, the authorities noted excessive speeds throughout the work zone and speeds well above those posted. As a result, the MVMS system logic (JAMLOGIC) was simply reconfigured to provide excessive speed warnings when the average speeds exceeded 95kph. This threshold speed was determined by examining speed data from the previous week and setting it just above the 85th percentile. The goal was to try to keep speeds reasonable and reduce differentials and unsafe speeds.
