Brexit and Covid Communication Control at Ports

Variable Message Signs (VMS) are a flexible, dynamic and reliable way of conveying valuable information at British and Irish Ports. VMS solutions from Mobile VMS can provide advanced passenger information, easily relayed in real-time via our mobile, solar-powered signs.

The use of variable message signs at ports and/or tunnels can be an effective way of imparting dynamic information to traffic, especially during these testing times for our economy, when the efficient movement of critical freight has become vital.  Mobile VMS offer a flexible and portable sign solution that can be used for communicating:

  • Brexit / Covid-related information on border/customer control
  • Advance Passenger Information (API)
  • Safety and environmental messages relating to port/tunnel operations
  • Information on roadworks and road closures that impact port/tunnel traffic
  • Ferry or freight information
  • Other port police/road safety-related messages

After installation at Dover Port, a spokesperson commented:

“The signs were found to be of considerable benefit and their portable nature and JamLogic operating software meant they could be easily deployed around the Port estate and programmed in minutes.”

Belfast Harbour, one of the UK’s busiest ports has also benefitted from the procurement of Mobile VMS for their port operations and the harbour police also deployed VMS separately, recognizing the benefit onsite for imparting important security and safety messages.

Ian Spratt, Port Operations at Belfast Harbour told us:

“Having initially trialed a mobile variable message sign from Mobile VMS Ltd, the Port Operations team decided to invest in signs to promote dynamic, safety and service information to our Port users.

In addition, the VMS signs fitted with radar attachments are used for Belfast Harbours’ ongoing road safety programme. The VMS with radar attachment display vehicle speeds which advise drivers to reduce speed accordingly in critical areas. The Harbour Police have recently procured additional VMS for use in site security, events and traffic management.”

A further glowing review comes from Thea George, Ports Operations and Security Manager at ABP Southampton:

“Visitor and passenger safety is of paramount importance in the Port of Southampton and the use of these VMS along with the associated JamLogic control software allows us to display active messaging and prepare in advance for busy cruise ship arrivals and departures.

ABP Southampton Operations and Security Teams have been really impressed with the levels of service and support offered by Mobile VMS during the recent procurement of several VMS for use in safety, security and information to passengers and visitors to the Port of Southampton.”

At Eurotunnel, where the importance of the effective movement of freight traffic between the UK and France is crucial for our economy, Geoff Taylor, Project Manager Eurotunnel, had the following to say:

“ Eurotunnel have worked with Mobile VMS for several years, we have purchased variable message signs and speed indication devices. We have also leased signs for specific events. All the signs are easy to use and of great quality, however what makes a difference is the excellent response from the friendly and helpful staff backed up with a quick delivery/ collection service”

In addition to our variable message signs, we can provide cost-effective ‘live’ CCTV overview of Port operations via our award-winning JamLogic operating software.
